Gary Criss recorded the song in 1978. Brazilian singer and songwriter Bebel Gilberto sang the song on her album August Day Songs . Even Selena Gomez sang Rio de Janeiro , as well as Barry White and Joe Bonamassa .

1945 were Ary Barroso and Ned Washington with her song Rio de Janeiro in the category "Best Song" for a Oscar nomination. However, the award went to Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke for her song Swinging on a Star from the movie drama The Road to Happiness ( Going My Way ).
