Risby-vejene

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Risby-vejene ( German  "Risbywege" ) is a complex of old streets, ( Danish Oldtidsvejen ) on the Danish island of Zealand , which were used from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages .

In 1973 a typical road from the Viking Age (800–1050 AD) was excavated in a meadow by Risby Å (river) near Præstø between Bårse and Risby . The almost intact stretch of road on the north side of the river is 36 meters long and three meters wide. The piece that was once of a similar length on the south side is severely plowed. The roadways made of layers of large pebbles were bordered by curb stones. The path over the river was bridged with thresholds over a length of 4.5 m. Four large stones supported a wooden platform. Underneath, car parts as well as parts of axles and wheels were discovered . The two pieces of road, connected by a bridge, are just long enough that you can get over the stream and its marshy bank area.

The C14 dating of the path showed a value around the year 1000. Traces of older roads were discovered under the stone path, one of which dates from the late Bronze Age . Thus the crossing was part of an old system of paths and was used for a long time.

The surveys made in 1975 and 1976 discovered four other paved roads, a boardwalk, a wooden bridge and almost 30 pieces of brushwood covered paths in the Risby Valley.

Dating was not always possible, but it is believed that:

  1. some brushwood paths date from the Neolithic Age,
  2. a group of brushwood paths dates from the late Bronze Age ,
  3. another group emerged from the Migration Period (400 AD)
  4. some of the overlying stone paths resemble those found in Borremose and near Tibirke .

The uppermost path made of large, flat field stones is reminiscent of the nearby Broskovvejen .
