Rissa is a genus of birds within the seagulls (Larinae). The genus includes only two species, the kittiwake ( Rissa tridactyla ) and the rock gull ( Rissa brevirostris ). They are small seagulls with a short, powerful bill, very short legs and largely reduced rear toes. While the kittiwake iswidespread in the Holarctic , the rocky gull only occurs on the coasts of the northern Pacific . Both species breed in colonies on cliffs on the seashore and can only be found in the open sea outside of the breeding season.

The genus Rissa was established in 1826 by the English zoologist James Francis Stephens .
