The company was founded in 2004 by Robert Straubhaar (born 1961), until March 5, 2010 as River Advice Ltd., later as an AG. Straubhaar is the majority shareholder and also chairman of the executive board.

From 2012 to 2015 the company was also involved in the ocean cruise sector. With a view to the global cruise industry, River Advice and the US company International Shipping Partners (ISP) founded a joint company that began operating globally on November 1, 2012 as the competence and service center FleetPro Passenger Ship Management . With a fleet of more than 50 ships and a capacity of around 11,000 hotel beds, the world's leading independent manager of river and ocean cruise liners was to be created. At the end of 2015, River Advice returned to its old name after the successful sale of the high seas business at FleetPro and focused on the management of river cruise ships.

According to its own information, River Advice operated 45 river cruise ships with over 1,500 employees for around 20 tour operators and ship owners in 2016. The focus of increased engagement in inland shipping in 2016 was the takeover of Cologne-Düsseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt AG by means of a share purchase worth € 5.6 million.

River Advice offers tour operators and ship owners a wide range of services for inland passenger shipping throughout Europe:

River Advice uses a large number of subsidiaries and partner companies in which River Advice and Robert Straubhaar are involved. These companies include a. River Nautical GmbH, River Services GmbH, River Academy AG, Atlas River Cruising GmbH, Avalon Europe AG, Königstein River Cruises GmbH, SCI Swiss Cruises International Kreuzfahrten AG, River Dock GmbH, ETERNITY CRUISE GmbH, ROI AG.

Until autumn 2016, River Advice did not have its own ships. That is why River Advice did not see itself as a shipping company in the classic sense, but as an independent, modular competence platform. But that changed with the takeover of ships from the Premicon company for ship funds.

  • The Cologne-Düsseldorf Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt has been part of the River Advice Group with 13 ships since autumn 2016 . The takeover was carried out by the subsidiary KD River Invest founded by River Advice AG. Robert Straubhaar is the chairman of the supervisory board of the new KD GmbH. According to the Handelsblatt, KD has developed positively after the takeover. While the previous two years had lost one million each, profits of around one million each followed in the two years that followed.
  • On the initiative of Robert Straubhaar, the project to set up a shipping company was started one year later. With the support of River Advice, River Opportunity Invest AG (ROI) was founded in autumn 2017, which took over 13 ships from Premicon. Robert Straubhaar is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ROI Holding AG.
  • River Advice acts as a shipping company for the tour operator Avalon Waterways with the ships Avalon Affinity, Artistry II, Expression, Felicity, Illumination, Imagery II, Impression, Luminary, Panorama , Passion, Poetry II, Tapestry II, Tranquility II, Visionary and Vista .
  • The following ships are operated for the tour operator nicko cruises: Bellissima, Casanova, Frederic Chopin, Heidelberg, Katharina von Bora, Rhein Symphonie and Rhein Melodie.
  • The ships River Discovery II, River Splendor, River Venture and River Voyager are available for Vantage Deluxe World Travel.

With the establishment of Triton River GmbH on July 20, 2020, River Advice aims to plan, support and operate shipping projects on rivers and inland waters worldwide.

Employees and locations

The company employed around 2000 people in 2017 and operated over 82 river cruise ships and twelve day excursion ships (March 2017). In 2019, a collective labor agreement was signed with the globally active trade union Nautilus International for around 2,500–3,000 River Advice employees.

According to its own information, the company currently operates around 100 ships and has offices in Basel (Switzerland), Cologne (Germany), Limassol (Cyprus) and Luxembourg.
