Robert Berland

Robert "Bob" Lee Berland (born November 5, 1961 in Chicago ) is a former American judoka .

The 1.88 m tall Berland fought in the middleweight division until 1985. At the Pan American Games in 1983 he lost in the final against the Canadian Louis Jani and received the silver medal. In the same year he was defeated at the World Championships in Moscow in the quarterfinals against Detlef Ultsch from the GDR, with victories over the Hungarians Miklós Szabó and Karel Purkert from Czechoslovakia Berland secured the bronze medal. In 1984 the Olympic Games took place in Los Angeles, Berland reached the final with four wins and then lost to the Austrian Peter Seisenbacher .

From 1986 Berland started in the light heavyweight division. At the Pan American Championships in 1986 he was defeated in the final to the Brazilian Alfredo Fernandez . At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 Berland lost in his first fight against the German Marc Meiling and in the round of hope against the Belgian Robert Van de Walle .
