Robert C. Myers

Robert C. Myers (* around 1960) is a Canadian theoretical physicist .

Myers received his bachelor's degree in applied physics from the University of Waterloo in 1982 and his master's degree from Princeton University in 1983 , where he received his PhD in physics in 1986 with Malcolm J. Perry . He was a post-doctoral student at the later Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara. In 1989 he went to McGill University , where he received a full professor in 2000. Since 2001 he has been at the Perimeter Institute (and thus a founding member) and Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo. In 2019 he became director of the Perimeter Institute.

He dealt with higher dimensional black holes, D-branes (where the Myers effect is named after him, which makes it possible to form a D2-brane from D0 branes) and general gravitational aspects of string theory and is one of Canada's leading string theorists . He discovered the Myers effect in 1999 when he was constructing branen effects in background fields. Groups of branes are polarized by the background fields and expand. The Myers-Perry metrics are higher-dimensional analogues of the Kerr metric in four dimensions (i.e. the spacetime of rotating black holes). They play a role in the construction of brane solutions in string theory. He has done fundamental work on strings in dimensions other than critical. With colleagues he also investigated the possibility of cosmic superstrings and pointed out their possible observability. Most recently he has been working on quantum entanglement in the holographic principle .

In 1999 he received the Herzberg Medal from the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) for fundamental contributions to the understanding of the microscopic physics of black holes and D-branes. In 2005 he received the prize in theoretical and mathematical physics from the Canadian Association of Physicists ( CAP-CRM Prize in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics) and in 2012 the Vogt Medal from CAP and from TRIUMF. In 2006 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada . In 1995 and 1997 he won the Gravity Research Foundation's essay competition.

From 2002 to 2012 he was on the editorial board of the Annals of Physics and since 2007 of the Journal of High Energy Physics. He is one of the Highly Cited Researchers.
