Robert C. Retherford

Robert Curtis Retherford ( 1912 - 1981 ) was an American physicist . He was a PhD student in Willis Lamb's research group at the Comlumbia Radiation Laboratory . His best-known work, which he carried out in collaboration with Willis Lamb, is an experiment that shows the Lamb shift in the fine structure of hydrogen . This was a crucial advance in understanding quantum electrodynamics .
