Robert Dean Smith

Robert Dean Smith (born May 2, 1956 in Kansas , USA ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Robert Dean Smith was born in Kansas, USA, and studied singing with Margaret Thuenemann at Pittsburg State University . He also studied saxophone and played in various classical and jazz ensembles. He then continued his vocal studies with Daniel Ferro at the Juilliard School in New York .

Like many hero tenors , Robert Dean Smith began his career as a baritone and could be heard in lyrical baritone roles in small houses in Germany for several years before he changed his subject. He then switched to tenor with the help of his wife and teacher Janice Harper. Smith was permanently engaged at the Mannheim National Theater in the 1990s .

Smith is best known for his interpretations of Walther von Stolzing in the Meistersinger von Nürnberg and the title role in Lohengrin . At the Bayreuth Festival , Robert Dean Smith performed as Tristan in 2005 and 2006 , as Walther von Stolzing from 1997 to 2002, as Lohengrin from 2000 to 2002 and as Siegmund in Die Walküre from 2001 to 2004 . In the 2008–2012 seasons, he again played the male title role in Tristan und Isolde.
