Robert Debré (born December 7, 1882 in Sedan , † May 1, 1978 in Le Kremlin-Bicêtre ) was a French pediatrician .

Debré was the son of the Chief Rabbi of Colmar . The family emigrated to France after the annexation of Alsace by the German Empire. Debré first studied philosophy, then medicine in Paris (graduated in 1906). He did his PhD on a meningitis serum for children (introduced by Simon Flexner ) and specialized in pediatrics especially in children. During the First World War he served as an army doctor in Verdun, among other placesand from 1918 headed the Hygiene Institute in Strasbourg. From 1920 he was a hospital doctor. Before the war, he was instrumental in vaccination campaigns for children in France and the fight against child tuberculosis, where he also became a specialist in bacteriology and immunology. In 1940 he became a professor of pediatrics at the Children's Hospital in Paris. In 1943 he had to go into hiding because of his ties to the Resistance and as a Jew. After the war he was one of the founders of UNICEF . In 1950 he founded the International Childrens Center, which trained doctors and nurses from developing countries. From 1958 he reformed the French medical education at universities, supported by his son Michel Debré , who was Prime Minister under De Gaulle .

In France he is considered to be the founder of pediatrics and the modern design of university hospitals (CHU).

In 1946 Robert Debré published together with Paul Rohmer the book Traité de Pathologie infantile (2,500 pages in two volumes).

In 1961 he was accepted as a member of the French Academy of Sciences , in 1972 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . A hospital in Paris is named after him today. The name of a rare hereditary disease ARCL2 type Debré also refers to him .
