The T-shaped, white-painted house was built by the married couple JM Coffman in 1919 using a timber frame construction. Dr. Isaac M. Howard and his wife Hester Ervin Howard bought it a little later. Their son Robert was a teenager when the family moved into the house. The Howards added a bathroom and the back porch. Robert E. Howard committed suicide in 1936 in his car which was parked in the driveway of the house, suicide . His father sold it to Nancy Elizabeth Grisham in 1944.

The building was acquired in 1989 by the Cross Plains-based non-profit organization Project Pride , which had it restored and furnished with stylish furniture. The property was damaged by a tornado that struck Cross Plains in 1994. Project Pride had this damage repaired and a pavilion was built for community events. In 1994 the structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places Listings.
