Carlos Enrique Cuartas Bedoya (born August 15, 1940 in Itagüí , Departamento de Antioquia , Colombia ; † July 10, 2011 there ) was a Colombian chess player . He was one of the best chess players in Colombia.

Life

Carlos Cuartas was a chess teacher in his home province of Antioquia and later in Cali . He spent some time in Switzerland at the end of the 1970s . He died of cancer.

successes

He has won the Colombian individual championship seven times: in 1965 in Belencito ( Departamento de Boyacá ), 1967 in Bucaramanga , 1968 in Medellín , 1970 in Bogotá , 1975 in Bogotá, 1976 in Cali and 1983 in Envigado (Departamento de Antioquia).

With the Colombian national team, he took part in ten Chess Olympiads between 1964 and 1994 with a total score of 77.5 points from 130 games (+53 = 49 −28; 59.6 percent), with the first in Havana in 1966 and in Haifa in 1976 Brett played. In 1972 in Skopje he received an individual bronze medal for his performance of 13 points from 18 games on the third board.

In 1975 he was awarded the title of International Master .
