The Houghton Fire Hall , officially the Continental Fire Company Building , is a former fire station on the corner of Huron Street and Montezuma Avenue in Houghton , Michigan , United States . The Michigan Mining School began in the building. The structure is classified as a Michigan State Historic Site .

history

The Continental Fire Company was founded in Houghton in 1860. The first fire station was built in 1861 on the shores of Lake Superior , roughly where the Portage Lake Lift Bridge is today.

A new fire station was built in 1883 on the corner of Huron Street and Montezuma Street. The Continental Fire Company used the basement where horses were housed and the ground floor where the syringe trolleys were parked. The offices of the local administration were on the second floor. The Michigan Mining School , today the Michigan Technological University, held from 1886 to 1889 their lectures in these premises from. In the early years of the 20th century, the building on the north side was extended in order to be able to store more oats and hay for the horses. In 1916 an extension was added to the west side to accommodate two more fire engines.

The city gave up its offices in the fire station in the 1930s. On August 5, 1966, a bronze plaque was unveiled to commemorate the building's earlier use as a university building . In 1974, the fire department moved into a new, more centrally located fire station that was built on Sharon Avenue to accommodate the more modern equipment that needed more space. The fire bell was removed in October 1975 and moved to the new fire station. The western extension was sold and housed a trade in auto accessories.

The fire station was listed as a Michigan State Historic Site on August 6, 1976 . In 1978 the university bought the building from the city to use it as a warehouse. It was sold to a private group in 2010 who renovated it and turned it into an entertainment operation in February 2012.

architecture

The fire station is a flat roof building with three floors - two full floors above ground and the basement - made of bricks in the Italianate style . The foundation is also built of rubble stones and painted white. A small, square clock tower was originally located on the dome at the front of the building. The vertical space served as a hose tower for drying the fire hoses .
