Robert Kappus
Robert Kappus (born November 8, 1904 in Frankfurt am Main , † February 20, 1973 in Paris ) was a German mechanical engineer.
Kappus studied mechanical engineering at the TH Darmstadt from 1924 to 1929 and was then assistant to Wilhelm Schlink (Chair of Mechanics and Aerodynamic Institute). He then worked for the German Aviation Research Institute (DVL) in Berlin-Adlershof until 1945 . In 1938 he received his doctorate from the TH Berlin. From 1947 to 1969 he was with the French ONERA in Chatillon near Paris and worked on the analysis of stresses in aircraft construction and from 1955 on the dynamics of aircraft as supporting structures, with aero- and thermoelasticity of aircraft.
He succeeded in developing an exact theory of the torsional buckling of bars with an open profile in the elastic range. Before that there were only approximate solutions ( Herbert Wagner , Friedrich Bleich , Hans Heinrich Bleich ). Other works by him were also important for the theory of elasticity, such as a work from 1939 in which he further developed work by Erich Trefftz on elastic stability.
