Robert King Carter

Robert Carter (* 1663 ; † August 4, 1732 ) was a colonist in Williamsburg in what was then the Colony of Virginia .

Carter was the richest planter in the British colony of Virginia. Around 1722 around 1,000 slaves were working on his tobacco plantations . His family became so powerful and important

for saying, "Shake any tree in Virginia and a carter will fall". Three of his descendants signed the Declaration of Independence and two became Presidents of the United States . Other famous descendants are General RE Lee (1807–1870) and the country singer June Carter Cash (1929–2003).
