Robert Tomasulo (born October 31, 1934 - April 3, 2008 ) was an American computer engineer.

Tomasulo studied at Manhattan College and joined IBM Research in 1956 . After around 10 years he switched to the development department of mainframe computers, for example the System / 360 model 91. He stayed with IBM for 25 years until the early 1980s. He then worked for Storage Technology Corporation , co-founded NetFrame in the 1980s (server systems) and was a consultant for computer architecture at Amdahl Consulting.

He is known for the algorithm named after him ( Tomasulo algorithm ), which he introduced in 1967 when he was at IBM . It allows out-of-order execution of instructions in the processor , e.g. B. when certain commands are blocked due to data conflicts. It was first implemented in the IBM System / 360 ( floating point unit in Model 91).

In 1997 he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award .
