Robert Turner (Bahai)

Robert Turner (born October 15, 1855 in Virginia , † July 1909 in California ) is the first black man on the American continent to become a Baha'i . He was posthumously appointed a disciple of Abdu'l Baha by Shoghi Effendi .

Life

Robert Turner was the butler for the philanthropist Phoebe Hearst . The Bahai Lua Getsinger visited San Francisco shortly before 1898 . It was through her that Phoebe Hearst and Robert Turner learned and accepted the teachings of Baha'u'llah . Phoebe Hearst invited several believers on a pilgrimage. This was the first pilgrimage by believers with a Christian background from the west. Robert Turner, who met Abdu'l Baha in February 1899 while he was imprisoned in Acre , also took part . Robert Turner remained an avowed believer until his death.
