The Robert Walser Center is a publicly accessible research and communication center on Robert Walser and Carl Seelig and was opened in Bern in 2009 . It collects, indexes and mediates their works and bequests. The center, which is available to both specialists and laypeople, maintains an archive , a library , two rooms with free workplaces and a temporary exhibition. It publishes works and specialist literature, organizes conferences, workshops, events and exhibitions. Another focus is the promotion of translations. There is cooperation with universities, technical colleges, schools, theaters, museums, archives, editions and literature houses as well as with translators.

history

In 1966, the lawyer Elio Fröhlich founded the Carl Seelig Foundation in Zurich, which in 1973 set up the Robert Walser Archive in order to preserve and expand Walser's estate and make it accessible to increasingly interested research. In 2004 the foundation was renamed the Robert Walser Foundation Zurich. The directors of the Robert Walser Archive between 1973 and today were and are in this order: Katharina Kerr, Guido Stefani, Werner Morlang , Bernhard Echte , Margit Gigerl, Lucas Marco Gisi and Lukas Gloor.

In 2009 a profound restructuring followed, combined with the move to Bern, the renaming of the institution to Robert Walser Foundation Bern and the opening of the Robert Walser Center under the founding director Reto Sorg. Since then, the Robert Walser Archive has been a central part of the Robert Walser Center.

The Robert Walser Center has also been working with a group of volunteers since 2009, who support the employees in their scientific work and help ensure that the center can offer general opening times.

Robert Walser Archive

The focus of the archive is the collection on Robert Walser, which includes manuscripts, correspondence, biographical material and a constantly expanding collection for the reception of the work, which are inventoried, secured and researched. The valuable manuscripts (including the so-called micrograms) have been kept in the Swiss Literary Archives of the Swiss National Library in Bern since 2009 , but they are still the property of the Foundation. The archive also includes part of the estates of the siblings of Robert Walser and Carl Seelig, as well as the Walser researchers Anne Gabrisch, Jochen Greven and Werner Morlang. The Robert Walser Center and the Robert Walser Archive have regularly produced editions and publications on Robert Walser since the 1980s.
