Robert Willett

Robert Willett (* around 1956) is an American solid-state physicist.

Willett studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1979 and then medicine from the University of California, San Francisco with a PhD (MD) in 1983. He also received his PhD in physics from MIT in 1988. He then went to Bell Laboratories .

He investigated one and two-dimensional systems such as quantum Hall effects (also for the state with quantum number 5/2 in fractional QHE) in two-dimensional systems or nanowires (on which he investigated decoherence in metals), for example, surface acoustic waves of small wavelengths uses. He further developed materials with photonic band gaps and researched electrical conduction in individual molecules.

In 2002 he received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize with Jainendra Jain and Nicholas Read for theoretical and experimental work based on the composite fermion model for half-filled landau states and other quantum Hall systems (laudation). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society .
