content

Robin Hood lives as an outlaw in Sherwood Forest with his henchmen . Initially unrecognized, King Richard the Lionheart , who has returned home, is with them. After he was recognized as king, he lets Robin and his people - of whose loyalty he could see for himself - continue to hunt in the forest. However, he threatens the death penalty if they mess with the townspeople. Robin loves Marian, the Nottingham Sheriff's ward . When she is about to be married against her will, Robin plans to kidnap her. The May Festival offers an opportunity for this, when the whole city is on its feet. But Robin is recognized and arrested. The king, true to his threat, proclaims Robin's condemnation. When Marian intervenes for her lover, he changes his mind and decides to put Robin's loyalty to the test. At court day in the forest, he offers Robin who confesses a position at court, but he refuses - out of loyalty to Marian and his companions. With this he passed the test, whereupon the king pardoned and ennobled him.

Press reviews

A correspondent report in the “Oldenburger Zeitung” reported after the second performance: “The repetition of Robin Hood made an even more favorable impression in the performance than the première on the previous Sunday, which was only affected by a few minor imperfections. The performers and the composer were repeatedly given the honor of evocation; the local audience, which is not exactly lavish with its applause and is therefore so often regarded as cold and unresponsive, at the end of the opera demanded most stormily that recognition which only in the rarest cases is given to the victor in drama or opera, the orchestra's flourish. The composer was greeted with cheering shouts when he appeared in the midst of the singers who had brought his characters and the idea of his work to life in a vivid and effective manner. A large part of the appreciation which the new opera received in such abundance also belongs to the talented lyricist Mosen, who knew how to give a brilliant name new splendor. "
