Roblox is a computer game platform on which users can create their own games and play them with users from all over the world. It was developed by developers David Baszucki and Erik Cassel and has over 100 million active players per month.

Founder and CEO David Baszucki began testing a first version of the program in 2004 under the name "DynaBlocks". In 2005 it was renamed ROBLOX and was released for the PC . The platform was officially released by Roblox Corporation in 2006. According to its own information, the game makes several hundred million US dollars a year and all creators together receive around 30 million dollars a year.

Gameplay

Roblox is a game that allows players to create their own games. The engine used for this is Roblox Studio . It can be downloaded for free. It is built with Lego- like building blocks. Players also have the option of using the Lua scripting language to dynamically change the game environment and program their own games. Plugins can also be developed with Lua and used in Roblox Studio.

Users can advertise their games through offers. You can also create game passes. These can be bought by other users. They bring some little extras into play, which the creators can decide creatively about themselves. "Developer Products" can only be bought once in each game. They are micro-transactions ( micropayments ) that are paid for with the in-game currency Robux. A percentage of the revenue from the Gamepasses and Developer Products goes to Roblox itself.

Roblox can be played with a keyboard, mouse, touchpad and gamepad, among other things. The player can also switch between the first person perspective and the third person perspective .

Robux

Robux is a virtual currency from Roblox that can be bought with real money. For € 4.99 you get 400 Robux. This currency can be used to purchase special rights, so-called "gamepasses" , in all Roblox games (provided the developer provides products). Players can also buy clothes with Robux. Robux can also be obtained by selling your own clothing, but Roblox “Premium” is required for this. The abbreviation for Robux is R $.

User numbers

According to its own information, Roblox is most popular among all providers with children under 13, with 25.5 million users of the age group per month. This means that usage is higher than that of the web video platforms YouTube and Netflix . However, the statistics, the source of which is given as Comscore , only refers to PC and game consoles and not to mobile devices. It remains unclear to which geographical area the statistics refer. The game also competes strongly with the often-compared game Minecraft in terms of player numbers . Roblox has two million content creators with over 11 million games. In the future, therefore, more user-generated content should be promoted and developers should also be better financed. In early August 2019, Roblox had over 100 million monthly active players, surpassing Minecraft and Fortnite , which are among the games with the most monthly players .

development

Roblox was created by co-funders David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004. Roblox - a combination of the words "robot" (English) and "blocks" (English) - was released as a beta version this year. The website was officially launched in 2006.

In March 2007, Roblox became a partner with COPPA ( Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ) and a secure chat was introduced. In August 2007, Roblox added the Builders Club, a premium membership that is now called Roblox Premium.

In December 2011, Roblox held their first “Hack Week”, an annual event where Roblox developers present innovative ideas from the company.

On December 11, 2012, Roblox released the iOS version of the game. CEO David Baszucki stated in an interview with Massive that he also wanted to make Roblox available in the digital markets of “Android, Windows, Steam, Mac, Chrome, Amazon”.

In April 2016, Roblox released “Roblox VR” for Oculus Rift . At the time of publication, more than ten million games were available in 3-D.

In June 2016, the company released a version compatible with Windows 10. A few months later it was announced that Roblox would be coming to PlayStation 4.

Token

In January 2017, Jazwares, a game maker, joined Roblox Corporation to create 40 game minifigures. These are based on games that users have created. They are comparable to the Lego minifigures. All of these sets contain a code that can be exchanged for virtual items. At the end of the year, Roblox announced the second series of minifigures: 40 new figures of popular characters from games were produced. There is also a surprise box that contains a random figure.
