The Roché Peak is a distinctive and 365 m (according to British specifications 356 m ) high mountain on Bird Iceland off the northwestern tip of South Georgia . It is the highest point on the island.
For many years the name La Roche Strait was common for the strait between Bird Island and South Georgia known today as Bird Sound . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the mountain that way in 1961 to keep the Bird Sound's original name in a different form. It is named after the English merchant Anthony de la Roché , who discovered South Georgia in 1675.
