history

Rochade goes back to an idea of Christoph Röttger, the later co-founder of Röttger & Osterberg Software-Technik GmbH, and was first described in a paper in 1979.

The product name "Rochade" was chosen because on the one hand it began with the first letters of the surnames of the company founders Christoph Röttger and Wolf-Heinrich Osterberg, on the other hand it was supposed to arouse associations with the (skillful) move castling .

After the development of Rochade in 1981 by the German company Röttger & Osterberg Software-Technik GmbH (abbreviated R&O Software-Technik GmbH), the product was ready for the market in 1983 under the operating system BS 2000 from Siemens. After initial success in the BS 2000 market, versions for the MVS and VM operating systems from IBM, which were then the most widespread on mainframes at the time, soon followed.

As early as 1985, a version for the only a few years old IBM PC under MS-DOS was developed, a sensation at the time for mainframe software. This PC version was presented in autumn 1985 at the “Systems” trade fair in Munich.

An important milestone in the development of Rochade was the establishment of a development department in Chemnitz in 1990, even before reunification. The additional developers gained there brought a lack of know-how and urgently needed development capacity. The Chemnitz branch grew very quickly from 6 to around 30 employees. It was one of the decisive factors in the subsequent breakthrough on international markets outside of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The first version for client-server operation appeared in 1992.
