The Rochers aux Oiseaux ( French , English Bird Rocks , in German meaning bird rocks ) are a small group of four rock islands in the extreme northeast of the Magdalen Islands , around twenty kilometers east-northeast of the nearest Brion Island in Canada . They have an area of only four hectares in plan, of which the lion's share is on the main island of Rocher aux Oiseaux in the southeast . The latter reaches a height of 30 meters above sea level.
In addition to the main island, the second largest rock Rocher aux Margaulx , located just under 1200 meters northwest of it, is named.
Since March 29, 1917 the rock group has been designated as a bird sanctuary . The protected area has a total area of 649 hectares and, in addition to the rocks, also includes 645 hectares of sea area.
