Rochor Center

The Rochor Center was a group of buildings in Singapore erected by the Housing and Development Board HDB.

history

Since the 1960s, more and more people lived in slum-like conditions with poor sanitary facilities, as the population of Singapore did not have enough housing. Therefore, as part of the Housing and Development Board's urban renewal program, the Rochor Center was built and completed in 1977 to accommodate residents and businesses. In November 2011 it was announced that the government would acquire the Rochor Center to enable the new 21.5 km North-South Corridor (NSC) and the expansion of the Ophir-Rochor Corridor. This north-south corridor would become Singapore's 11th expressway and the northern parts of the island with the East Coast Parkway(ECP) when it is completed in 2026. The aim is to reduce the load on the congested Central Expressway (CTE) in Singapore and reduce rush hour traffic by up to 30%. After the completion of the North-South Corridor, a new commercial development called “The Rochor Residences / Offices” will take place in the former Rochor Center.

As part of the renovation , the residents of the Rochor Center were relocated to Kallang Trivista , an HDB settlement with a mix of commercial and residential activities on Upper Boon Keng Road. Shops and businesses have also been relocated to other parts of Singapore. As of December 2016, 504 of the 567 households that lived in the Rochor Center at the time of closure had accepted apartments in the Kallang Trivista complex. As of January 2016, 106 stores (out of 183 originally) had closed while 36 households (out of 567) had moved out. On March 31, 2016, it was reported that the shop tenants would have to move out by September 30, 2016.

The parking sign advises drivers that the parking lot will be closed from March 31, 2017. From April 1, 2017, the entrance / exit was blocked and the electronic parking system was removed.

Since April 1, 2017, the entire building has been barricaded and the parking lot is permanently closed. Pedestrians are advised to stay out of the area since February 2018. The demolition began on June 26, 2018 and was completed in April 2019.
