Rochus Chapel

The Rochus Chapel in Hauset , a district of Raeren , East Belgium , is a chapel built at the beginning of the 18th century that was consecrated to St. Rochus of Montpellier , the patron saint of plague sufferers . It has been part of the parish since 1993 and has been a listed building since then .

history

The construction of the chapel took place at a time when the area was under the government of the Catholic Spanish Netherlands . After one of the many plague epidemics in this area, the residents wanted to build a chapel in order to be able to pray there for protection against infection. The exact time of construction can no longer be traced, but the inauguration of a bell in 1707 for "Hoset in the parish of Eynatten ", to which Hauset belonged since 1676, suggests a time around the turn of the century. The building was built on the shard heaps of a former pottery, which was mentioned in the village since 1470, but has not been in operation since the 16th century.

In 1899 the chapel received a fundamental redesign and a new west facade in neo-Gothic style by the Aachen architect Johann Peter Radermacher . At the end of this construction work, thirteen linden trees were planted in the immediate vicinity, most of which have been preserved. In 1969 the chapel was given a new entrance door and ten years later the interior was extensively renovated, including new clinker bricks on the interior walls.

Building description

The chapel consists of an almost rectangular floor plan, to which a three-sided apse for the chancel is connected on the east side . The building is provided with bluestone facades and is covered by a hipped roof in slate construction. In the rear area of the roof at the transition to the apse there is a small square bell tower on two short stilts, which is used to hang the exposed bell. The structure has a pointed roof on which a wrought-iron cross is attached.

In the three-axis input Gothic facade, which at its corners with buttresses is supported, which is centrally ogival front door attached over which the keystone of the year "AD1899" is engraved. To the side of the door there is a pointed arched window and on the sloping side of the apse there is a large ox-eye with four wedge-shaped stones; all windows are equipped with decorated lead glass .

Inside, during the restoration in 1899/1900, four new benches were installed and the statue of St. Gerhard Majella and the statue "Our Lady of Perpetual Help" are erected and the latter is surrounded by an ogival frame of lights. The corresponding picture of the constant help was hung up on August 15, 1900 and blessed. The eponymous statue of St. Rochus comes from the Rochus Church in Hauset and was erected in 1980 and made before 1910 as a replacement for the original figure from the 18th century, which was stolen on September 10, 1974.
