Rodrigo de Peñalosa Toledo (* 1480 in Madrid ; † 1530 in Naples ) was Charles V's ambassador to Henry VIII of England in 1525 .

Life

His father was Rui Díaz de Peñalosa, Alcalde Ordinario of Madrid under the government of John II of Aragon . The family lived in the parish of San Justo y San Perdo in Madrid.

From 1496 he served the Catholic royal couple in the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples from 1501 to 1504 under Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba y Aguilar .

From 1519 he served in Charles V's army as a captain. Peñalosa was there on February 24, 1525, when the imperial army stormed the siege troops of Francis I of France in front of Pavia at the Battle of Pavia and took Francis I prisoner.

Peñalosa received the order from the Condottiere to bring news of the capture of Francis I by France to Charles V in Madrid. On this trip, Peñalosa fell off his horse and broke his leg. So he wrote the news of Francis I's arrest in a letter and sent it ahead with his guide through France to Madrid. Peñalosa reached Madrid six days later on March 14, 1525. At the court of Charles V he was accepted into the Santiagoorden for his services which he had already performed in the militia .

On August 11, 1525, the Toledo Armistice came into effect. Francis I was forced to give up Milan, Genoa and Burgundy. After his release, Franz I revoked the peace treaty, arguing that it had been forced upon him while in captivity.

On the way back to Naples, Peñalosa met Charles V in Barcelona, who sent him as ambassador to announce that Francis I was not fulfilling the peace treaty. Capitán Peñalosa had descendants in the Kingdom of Naples.
