Roebourne is a West Australian city from the 19th century gold rush .

geography

Roebourne is located in the Pilbara region in Western Australia and is the administrative seat of Karratha City . It is 202 km from Port Hedland and 1,563 km from Perth .

history

The city thrived during the height of its gold rush in the late 19th century and was one of the largest settlements between Darwin and Perth. It was named after John Septimus Roe .

Gold from the Nullagine and surrounding copper mines contributed to Roebourne's initial prosperity. With the decline of both sources of income, the city lost its inhabitants and was only a shadow of its former self. Various state buildings around the city are reminiscent of this era.

Fighting later broke out in Roebourne between the Aborigines and the police , and this was documented in a federal report. The report showed that the police-to-citizen ratio in Roebourne (with 1200 Aboriginal residents) was five times the ratio of more densely populated areas in Western Australia.

Today the city lives from the nearby North West Coastal Highway and from tourism, especially as the gateway to many national parks inland.
