Roger Gallopin
Roger Edouard Gallopin (born December 14, 1909 in Geneva ; † March 18, 1986 ) was a Swiss lawyer and long-standing senior staff member and later a senior member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
He studied from 1929 to 1935 at the University of Munich , the University of Geneva and at the London School of Economics , and received at Geneva University in 1932 with a degree in law and in 1935 the promotion . After a brief activity as a lawyer in his hometown, he became a legal employee of the ICRC in 1936. After he had done military service in the meantime, he took over the management of the ICRC department for prisoners, internees and civilians in 1942. In the following years he rose within the committee's administration to deputy general secretary in 1944, to director of the operational area in 1946 and to managing director or later general director in 1950. In addition, he undertook several missions abroad for the ICRC.
In November 1967 he was co-opted as a member of the committee , and two years later he retired from the office of general director. After Eric Martin was elected ICRC president, Roger Gallopin served as president of the committee's council from 1973 to 1976. In the resulting constellation, which in fact represented a double presidency, Eric Martin mainly took on representative tasks and Roger Gallopin mainly took on executive management. In 1976 he retired, but remained a member of the committee. He was later made an honorary member of the ICRC and received the Medal of Honor from the Australian Red Cross in 1977.
Roger Gallopin was married twice and has two children.
