Roger III (Apulia)

Roger III (* 1118 - † May 2, 1149 or 1148) from the Hauteville family was the eldest son of King Roger II of Sicily and his first wife Elvira of Castile .

After the coronation of Rogers II as King of Sicily, his son Roger was named Roger III in 1130. appointed Duke of Apulia. He helped his father to conquer further territories in southern Italy and to put down an uprising of southern Italian barons and cities in 1139.

1139/40 married Roger III. Elisabeth von Blois, a daughter of Count von Blois Theobald IV. This marriage remained childless. Roger III but had two illegitimate sons by a daughter of Count Accardus of Lecce , whose name has not been passed down, even before his marriage . The eldest of these sons, Tankred of Lecce , was elected in 1190 as the rival king to Constance of Sicily , a daughter of Rogers II from his third marriage and thus half-sister Rogers III.

Roger III died on May 2, 1149 before his father died.
