The Roggeveldberge ( English Roggeveld Mountains ) are a mountain range in the Northern Cape Province , South Africa . The name “Roggeveld” comes from the wild rye , which used to be found here in abundance.

The mountain range lies between the towns of Calvinia and Sutherland , east and northeast of the Tankwa Karoo National Park . The mountains are located on the western edge of the Roggeveld , an extensive plateau that belongs to the Great Karoo . The Sneeukrans (German: "Snow Crown ") has a height of 1739 meters above sea level, another mountain near Sutherland is around 1777 meters high. There is an observatory nearby . This southern part is also known as Komsberg . The average annual rainfall in this winter rain areais 200 mm. The area is rarely visited by tourists.

The Ouberg Pass crosses the mountains at an altitude of 1404 meters; Another pass is the Verlatenkloofpas , which was built in 1876 under Thomas Bain. Sutherland, located in the southern part of the mountain range, is one of the South African places with the lowest low temperatures; temperatures of down to −15 ° C are measured here in winter and there is regular snow.
