Rogožarski ( Serbian - Cyrillic Рогожарски ) was a company in the aviation industry of Yugoslavia . The company was founded by Živojin Rogožarski as the first Serbian aircraft factory Rogožarski (Prva srpska fabrika aeroplana Rogožarski, Прва српска фабрика аероплана Рогожарски) on April 21, 1924 in Belgrade .

history

In 1923, the Yugoslav Ministry of the Army and Navy launched a public tender for domestic companies that could be entrusted with building aircraft with government funding. Two small private companies emerged from the selection: Ikarus in Novi Sad and Rogožarski in Belgrade. Rogožarski was originally a carpentry company without much reputation, but there was hope that the production of aircraft could be organized - also because Živojin Rogožarski had worked as an aircraft builder in Budapest during the First World War .

The first model was the Brandenburg with 100 hp Daimler-Benz engines, which were delivered until 1925. A series of 60 SB-1s , called Middle Brandenburg , with 160 and 185 hp Daimler-Benz engines followed by 1928 . First domestic models were those of Fizir developed Fizir-Maibach with 250 hp engines and Fizir-Wright with 220 hp engines. The first own model was the A.Ž.R trainer with 240 HP engines from Walter Engines as and a top speed of 240 km / h, which was rejected by the Yugoslav Air Force due to control problems. A lack of orders, investments in new models and high debts led Rogožarski to bankruptcy, but the company was converted into a joint stock company in 1934 and thus saved. New models followed that were more successful, including the R-100 , PWT , IK-3 and the promising R-313 .

When the Second World War broke out , Rogožarski had around 1,000 employees. After the war, the remnants of the company were merged with the competitor Ikarus to form the State Aircraft Factory (Državna Fabrika Aviona) under the domain of Ikarus. With the relocation of the State Aircraft Factory to Soko in Mostar , aircraft production in Rogožarski finally ended and the State Aircraft Factory itself was converted into the bus manufacturer Ikarbus in Novi Sad .
