Rogowski profile

A Rogowski profile is used to shape electrical electrodes in three dimensions, such as the plates of an electrical capacitor, with the aim of achieving a decreasing curve of the electrical field strength at the edges of the electrodes . Typically, this profile is used in the design of plate capacitors , as it avoids an excessive field at the edges and thus an electrical breakdown in the edge area. Disadvantages are the large construction and the dependence of the profile on the distance between the panels. This means that the distance cannot simply be varied, which, however, is often desirable in the case of high-voltage electrodes.

The first preparatory work on this form was carried out by James Clerk Maxwell , and in work by the namesake Walter Rogowski expanded to the form common today.

By mirroring the descriptive function, the plates, shown in black in the adjacent figure, can be formed. With this shape, the highest electric field strength occurs centrally in the middle of the plates and can be changed using the parameter that describes the distance between the plates.
