La tentation de Saint Antoine ( German The Temptation of Saint Anthony ) is a religious film from 1898 by Georges Méliès . In America the film was released under the title The Temptation of St. Anthony .
action
The monk Antonius reads a few verses from the Bible . Suddenly a woman appears out of nowhere, pulling on his beard. The monk begins to pray and the woman disappears again. When he wants to turn back to his book, he is suddenly ensnared by two women. With a few gestures he makes it disappear again.
When he kisses a skull , it is surrounded by three women who dance around it. They disappear again when he escapes from their dance. He turns to his crucifix and begins to pray. When he looks back at the Jesus figure , another woman comes towards him. This time his prayers did not go unheeded. An angel appears and puts an end to the ghost.
Background information
This is the first film about the temptations of Saint Anthony . Georges Méliès used the stop trick several times to make the women disappear again.
