Rohard the Younger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rohard , called the Younger (* before 1148, † after 1179), was the vice count and castellan of Jerusalem .

Historians gave him the nickname of the Younger to distinguish it from the Vice Count of Jerusalem of the same name from 1135 to 1152, who is called Rohard the Elder . Rohard the Younger may have been a nephew of Rohard the Elder. Rohard must have been of noble origin, since the office of castellan, unlike that of the Vice Count of Jerusalem, was only given to nobles.

In 1163 and 1165 he is documented as castellan and vice count of Jerusalem . His official seat was the Citadel called the Tower of David on the western edge of Jerusalem's old town . In further documents from the years 1171, 1176 and 1177 he is only called castellan, which probably indicates that the office of castellan was seen as more important than that of the vice-count. In 1178 the office of castellan was held briefly by Balian von Jaffa and Peter von Creseto , in 1179 Rohard was again in this office.
