Rohey Samba

Rohey Samba (also: Samba-Jallow , born 1982 in Farato ) is a Gambian writer and pilot .

Life

Rohey Samba grew up in Farato . According to her own statements, she was one of the top three candidates in the Common Entrance Examination for secondary schools in 1995 and therefore received a government scholarship. She attended Ndow's Comprehensive Senior Secondary School , which she graduated in June 2001.

In December 2001 she started to work as a trainee pilot at the Gambia Ports Authority . Samba was the first Gambian woman to work as a pilot. A scholarship could studying from 2003 Nautical ( Nautical Science ) at the Regional Maritime University in Accra begin (Ghana), where she graduated with a Bachelor of 2007. There she was editor-in-chief of a student nautical magazine.

She returned to the Ports Authority and was a junior pilot from 2009 . From January 2010 she was Assistant Marine Surveyor at the Gambia Maritime Administration . Thanks to a scholarship from the International Maritime Organization , she was able to acquire a Master's degree in Maritime Administration at the World Maritime University in Malmö (Sweden) in September 2010 . Upon her return, she was promoted to Principal Officer Maritime Safety and Environment .

In the 2017 parliamentary elections in Gambia , she worked for an election observation post of the European Union.

In August 2018, she was appointed Director of Communications, Outreach and Media for the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).

In 2019 she was a communications consultant for a security sector reform initiated by President Adama Barrow .

Jallow has been married to Ismaila since around 2002.

Artistic career

Around 2001 Samba wrote for the Daily Observer and won a young talent writing competition. She later also published in The Independent . Samba published her first book in 2003. Samba later planned to publish more poems in a volume called Tomorrow Waits . Since the subjects of the poems differed significantly, she later decided to publish them separately. The poems were written almost exclusively during her studies in Accra. The publication was challenging for her because she did not have the necessary funds and could not obtain financial support.

In 2015 she completed a further training course in acting at the Ebunjan Theater .

Around 2018 she was Secretary General of the Writers' Association of The Gambia (WAG) and was a board member of the Collecting Society of The Gambia (CSG), which campaigns for the rights of authors to use.
