Janet Badjan-Young

Janet Badjan-Young (born December 15, 1937 in Bathurst, now Banjul ) is a Gambian playwright.

Life

She closed her studies at the Rose Bruford College in Sidcup (UK) in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in speech and drama ( Speech and Drama ) from. From 1961 she worked for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service in Freetown as a journalist, radio announcer and actress and left the country in 1963 on a government scholarship to study Public Relations and Communications at Boston University in the USA .

In 1970 she worked for the Kenyan government and the Educational Media Service as a radio producer. She was also a consultant to the World Association for Christian Communication in Kenya .

In 1979 she received a master's degree in communication , according to other sources in broadcast administration .

From 1981 to 1991 she worked for the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (HABITAT). In March 1991, UN Secretary General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar appointed her Director of the Caribbean Office of the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago).

In 2016 she starred in Dani Kouyaté's film Medan vi lever (English title: While We Live ) , which was filmed in Sweden and Gambia.

Badjan-Young spent more than 35 years abroad and worked with various acting groups in Sierra Leone (Drama Circle, Freetown), Kenya (The Tamaduni Players, Nairobi), Nigeria and the Caribbean.

Since 2000 she has been organizing theater performances in and around Banjul with the Ebunjan theater group and is supported by the National Council for Arts and Culture of the Gambian Ministry of Tourism and Culture .

At the end of 2011, with the support of UNESCO , she opened the Ebunjan (also: Ebun Jan ) Theater in the south of Kanifing , where she performs plays. The theater is the first professional Gambian theater and has 300 seats.

Themes of her pieces include the so-called widow inheritance , in which widows marry a brother of their deceased husband, AIDS / HIV , human conflicts and the relationship between man and nature.
