2014 FY 71 is a large trans-Neptunian object in the Kuiper Belt , which is classified as a Scattered Disk Object (SDO) in terms of orbit dynamics . Because of its size, the asteroid is a dwarf planet candidate .

discovery

2014 FY 71 was discovered on March 28, 2014 by Scott Sheppard and Chad Trujillo , using the 4.0 m Víctor M. Blanco telescope (DECam) at the Cerro Tololo Observatory ( Chile ). The discovery was announced on May 7, 2015.

After its discovery, in 2014 FY 71 could be identified in photos taken as part of the Pan-STARRS project at Haleakalā Observatory ( Maui ) up to March 12, 2010, thus extending its observation period by four years, including his Calculate orbit more accurately. In September 2018 there were a total of 143 observations over a period of 9 years. The last observation so far was made in April 2018 at the Lowell Observatory . (As of March 6, 2019)

2014 FY 71 orbits the sun in 287.87 years on a slightly elliptical orbit between 34.62  AU and 52.58 AU from its center. The orbital eccentricity is 0.206, the orbit is 18.52 ° inclined to the ecliptic . The planetoid is currently 39.20 AU from the Sun. He last passed through perihelion in 1978, so the next perihelion should take place in 2266.

Marc Buie ( DES ) classifies the planetoid as SDO , while the Minor Planet Center does not have a specific classification; the latter classifies it as a non-SDO and generally as a “distant object” . The Johnston's Archive lists it as "other TNO" , which means it is definitely not a Cubewano or Resonantes KBO .

A diameter of 447 km is currently assumed, based on a reflectivity of 6% and an absolute brightness of 5.5  m . Assuming a diameter of 447 km, this results in a total surface of about 628,000 km 2 . The apparent magnitude of 2014 CO 23 is 21.48  m .

Since it can be assumed that 2014 FY 71 is in hydrostatic equilibrium due to its size and must therefore be largely round, it should meet the criteria for classification as a dwarf planet . Mike Brown believes that 2014 FY 71 may be a dwarf planet.
