history

The Roland was under construction at Sir WGArmstrong, Mitchell & Co in 1893 when it was bought by Norddeutscher Lloyd in April. She measured 3724 GRT, had a load capacity of 4900 tdw, was 109 m long and at 2200 hp it was 11.5 knots. It offered space for 28 second class passengers and 1,000 people in the tween deck. In structure, she was similar to the sister ships Pfalz and Mark .

On May 11, 1893, she made her maiden voyage to New York on September 13, 1893. On December 9, 1893, she was first used from Bremen to South America. On August 27, 1896, she ran from Bremen to Baltimore for the first time. In September 1900 she was one of the ships that transported the second part of the East Asian Expeditionary Force to China.

The Roland stayed in the service of the NDL longer than its replicas. Her 30th and last North Atlantic tour began on February 15, 1906 from Bremen to Baltimore. Her 16th and last trip to South America began on August 7, 1909. By November 1910, she made three tours to Havana .

At the beginning of 1911 it was sold with the Darmstadt and the Oldenburg to Turkey and there renamed Bari Ahmer .

On November 7, 1914, she was sunk by Russian warships off Eregli in the Black Sea.
