Life

Roland Batchelor, who turned to painting as a child, was employed as a customs and tax officer at the insistence of his father for a secure job from 1905. In his spare time he continued to paint, studying with George Morrow at the Putney School of Art and Design and, after completing his military service in World War I , with Harry Watson at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art away.

Batchelor, who spoke French fluently, traveled frequently to France , which was a lasting inspiration for his work. He created watercolors , but was also active as a draftsman and graphic artist. In his works he portrayed people in everyday situations, scenes and incidents anecdotally.

Works by Batchelor, whom Honoré Daumier , Thomas Rowlandson , William Turner and Rembrandt admired, have been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts , the Royal Institute of Watercolor Painters, and the Royal Society of Watercolor Painters. In 1966 Roland Batchelor was accepted as a member of the Royal Society of Watercolor Painters.
