Roland Freier
Roland Freier (born January 16, 1964 in Barth ) is a former German speed skater who competed in competitions for the German Democratic Republic and SC Karl-Marx-Stadt during his active time .
Career
He took part in the GDR championships in 1983 and, as a 19-year-old, was able to achieve an impressive eighth place over 10,000 meters and in the major all-around competition. After failing to qualify for the Winter Olympics in 1984 , he won his first two medals at the GDR championships in 1985 . He was runner-up in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. In 1986 he was able to win his first GDR championship title. In the big all-around competition, he took first place. He also won the bronze medal over the 5,000 meters at the GDR championships in 1986 .
The GDR championships in 1987 won over 10,000 meters. A year later he won both the 10,000 meters and the 5,000 meters at the GDR championships . In the same year he and his teammate Gabi Zange were nominated for the Winter Olympics in Calgary , Canada . He started over the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters and finished eighth in both competitions.
