Roland Hönig (born November 28, 1980 in Tulln an der Donau ) is an Austrian presenter , commentator and sports reporter for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ( ORF ).

Career

The son of a glazier and an employee was born in Tulln on the Danube. During his school days he played football and tennis for several years. Hönig graduated from the commercial academy in Tulln on the Danube. A few weeks after graduating from high school, he made his first journalistic experience at the radio workshop Gutenstein (summer 2000) before he started at the ORF regional studio Lower Austria in St. Pölten in January 2001. First as an editor in the current service, he was drawn to the sports department after six months.

Career

Hönig achieved national TV fame by hosting the table tennis, wrestling and basketball competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The Lower Austrian also worked as a table tennis commentator at the Olympics in 2012 (London) and 2016 (Rio de Janeiro). He had other television appearances as interview partner of the athletes at the World Ski Championships since 2009 and often in the Ski World Cup.

After 10 years in the ORF regional studio, he switched to the sports department at the ORF center in Vienna on the Küniglberg in January 2011. There Hönig works as a commentator, presenter and reporter (mainly football). This includes reporting at the European Football Championships in 2012 (Poland / Ukraine), 2016 (France) and at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he was part of the ORF team as a reporter and moderator. Since then, Hönig has been a regular at international appearances by the Austrian women's national football team (e.g. at the 2017 European Championship in the Netherlands ) or the U20 footballers ( U20 World Cup in New Zealand ). He also repeatedly visited Austria's team players in the context of reports and made portraits of Paul Scharner (then Wigan), Julian Baumgartlinger (then Mainz), Zlatko Junuzovic (Bremen), Martin Harnik and Florian Klein (then Stuttgart).

Hönig has been the presenter of the annual Austria Tour since 2011 . Together with ORF expert Thomas Rohrgger , he guides the audience through the programs.

Private

Roland Hönig has a daughter and lives in Tullnerfeld.
