Schmidt, who started for TS Marktredwitz , began his international career with the start at the Junior World Championship in 1986 in Lake Placid . There he won the bronze medal with the team in the team competition. On January 16, 1988 he made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup in Le Brassus . With the 13th place he immediately achieved World Cup points. Shortly afterwards, he also won points in Falun and finished the season in 29th place overall. In the 1988/89 season he started again in two World Cup races, where he achieved his best individual result in the World Cup with 7th place in Lake Placid. He finished the season shortly thereafter in 26th place in the overall World Cup standings. After the season he moved to the B World Cup, where he was active until 1993, before ending his active career with a 9th place in the B World Cup overall ranking.
After the end of his career, Schmidt worked as a junior trainer for the Nordic combined athletes at the Bavarian Ski Association.
