Roland Seiler

Roland Seiler (born March 9,  1954 ) is a Swiss sports psychologist .

Life

From 1973 onwards, Seiler completed a sports degree at the University of Bern , which he completed in 1978. The subject of his diploma thesis was “Orienteering performance depending on personality traits. An empirical study of young orienteers in Switzerland ”. From 1984 to the beginning of 1989 he worked at the German Sport University Cologne (DSHK) on his doctorate and obtained a doctorate in sports science in psychology and sports medicine. His dissertation with the title “Of ways and detours. Information processing and decision-making in orienteering ”was  assessed by Jürgen Nitsch and Jan-Peters Janssen and rated“ summa cum laude ”.

Between 1986 and 1994, Seiler was a research assistant in sports psychology at the Institute for Psychology at the German Sport University Cologne, and from 1994 to 1996 he was a lecturer in sports psychology and psychology at the DSHK. From the beginning of 1996 until May of the same year, Seiler worked at the Norwegian Sport University in Oslo  as a substitute professor for sport psychology. He turned down the offer of a professorship at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.In June 1996 he took up the position of head of the areas of sport psychology and social sciences at the Federal Office for Sport in Magglingen and remained in office until October 2005. During this time, namely from January 2003 to December 2004, Seiler was also director of the Sports Science Institute of the Federal Office for Sport.

In November 2005 he became Professor of Sport Psychology at the Institute for Sport Science at the University of Bern, from August 2009 to July 2011 he also held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences at the University of Bern, and in August 2016 he became Vice Director of Teaching at the Institute for Sports science. In 2019 he retired from university.

From 1997 to 2007, Seiler was President of the Swiss Association for Sport Psychology (SASP), having previously been on the organization's board from 1987. From 1999 to 2003 he was Vice President of the European Association for Sport Psychology (FEPSAC) and then its President from 2003 to 2007.

In May 2018, Seiler was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor by the Working Group for Sport Psychology in Germany (ASP).

The main areas of Seiler's research work include the subject complexes “psychological effects of sporting engagement”, “sport and violent behavior in young people”, the cognitive organization of sporting activities, school sport, the relationship between athlete and coach and the psychological regulation of collective activities in sport. He published several books on orienteering, and in 1994 Seiler and Andreas Stock published the “Manual Psychotraining in Sport”.
