Jan-Peters Janssen

Jan-Peters Janssen (born July 12, 1937 in Templin ; † November 17, 2017 ) was a German sports psychologist.

career

Janssen was born in the Uckermark and lived as a child and adolescent in Berlin , Denmark and Westphalia . Between 1959 and 1964 he studied psychology , which he completed at the University of Tübingen . There he completed his doctorate in 1968 and his habilitation in 1975.

Between 1976 and 1980 he held a professorship for sport psychology at the institute for sport science at the Ruhr University Bochum , from 1980 to 2002 Janssen was professor at the chair for sport psychology at the institute for sport and sport science at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel .

From 1979 to 1985 Janssen was a board member of the “Working Group for Sport Psychology in Germany”. His book “Fundamentals of Sports Psychology” is considered a classic in this field of sports science. Janssen is credited with transferring theories and methods of psychology to sports science and sports practice through his academic work.

In his research work, the focus was initially on the psychology of training stress and the terms concentration and attention in sporting contexts as well as motor learning and memory and training and performance aspects in athletics and handball, later he also moved on to health and rehabilitation sports and sports in old age at the center of his work. According to the obituary of the University of Kiel, Janssen “brought research on health promotion and the lifestyle of the elderly to a broad public long after his retirement.” He also dealt intensively with the history of sports and was one of the regular authors of the yearbook of the German Society for History Sports science.
