Rolf Krohmer

Rolf Krohmer (born April 30, 1948 in Novotroizkoje , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Kazakh-German engineer and professor at the Institute for Water and Water Development, Department of Water Management and Cultural Engineering of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Career

Rolf Krohmer studied civil engineering at the universities of Dschambul , Moscow and St. Petersburg. In 1980 he received his doctorate with distinction. In 1989 he completed his habilitation on problems of complex two-phase flows in water structures and bodies of water. After completing his studies, Krohmer worked as a university lecturer at the TU Jambul, from where he moved to other universities. From 1984 he was head of the Department of Water Management and Hydraulic Engineering at Moscow University. From 1989 Krohmer was head of department at the hydraulic engineering research institute. In 1992 he followed the call to the University of Karlsruhe , where he was appointed professor and head of the German-Russian Research Center (URSUS).

Research priorities

The main focus of his activities are flood protection and river bed processes, failure and reliability prognosis of hydraulic structures as well as integrated river basin management of large catchment areas. Rolf Krohmer is one of the leading scientists in the field of ecological restoration and maintenance of water bodies. He is in scientific cooperation with several research institutions and universities in Europe and Asia.

Krohmer is a board member of the International Academy for Sustainable Developments and Technologies (IANET) at the University of Karlsruhe and a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences for Water Management.

Awards

  • 2004: Honored as Author of the Year for his German-Russian specialist dictionary
  • 2005: Appointment as Knight of the Golden Eagle of the Russian Federation
  • 2011: Honorary Doctorate from Moscow University of Environmental Sciences
