Rolf Nieß (born October 3, 1938 ) was a football player in the GDR upper league . In the top division of the GDR Football Association , he played for SC Turbine Erfurt and Motor Zwickau .

In 1957 Nieß came from the youth department of the SC Turbine Erfurt in the GDR upper league. There he played his first league game for Erfurt on March 17, 1957 at the age of 18. In the encounter on the first day of the 1957 season SC Turbine Erfurt - SC Motor Jena (1: 1), coach Rüger tried it with Nieß as a left winger, but replaced him in the second half. After another brief assignment on matchday eight, Nieß was finally relegated to the reserve team. In 1958, coach Rüger started a new attempt with Nieß at the beginning of the season and let him storm again on the left side. Nieß was able to maintain his position uninterruptedly up to the seventh matchday, after which he was ousted by Jochen Müller and was only used sporadically in four other league games until the end of the season. In these eleven games he scored two goals.

In the seasons 1959 and 1960 Nieß played for the upper division Motor Zwickau. Even there he could not play his way into the team, in 1959 he came as a substitute at the end of the season to only three missions. In 1960 it was only enough for a league game on the 23rd matchday as a left winger. Nieß didn't score any goals for Zwickau and disappeared from higher-class football in 1961.

In the 1963/64 season, meanwhile played in the summer-spring rhythm, Nieß rose to the second-rate GDR league with the district league team Chemie Riesa . In the league season 1964/65 he was top scorer of the Riesa with eleven goals, but this did not prevent the immediate relegation. Nieß then left Chemie Riesa and rejoined SC Turbine Erfurt, which had made it back to the league after being relegated in 1964. Even under the new Erfurt coach Helmut Nordhaus , Nieß started his fifth league season from the start. But after two appearances as a striker on the right side, he was replaced by the previous regular striker Hans Graupe and only made two more appearances on the seventh and eighth matchdays. During the 1966/67 season Nieß was part of the squad of Erfurt's second team, which has since competed as FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . With FC Rot-Weiß II, Nieß played in the third-class district league, but also rose to the GDR league with this team at the end of the season. He remained in the squad of the second team in 1967/68 and was again the best striker of his team with twelve hits.

In 1968/69 the now 30-year-old played for the GDR league club Motor Eisenach , then he moved back to the district league at Motor Sömmerda . There he celebrated his third GDR league promotion after the 1970/71 season with the team, which has now been renamed Zentronik Sömmerda. In 1973 Nieß ended his career as a competitive athlete.
