Rolf G. Schneider (born March 17, 1940 in Hagen ) is a German mathematician who deals with geometry.

Schneider received his doctorate in 1967 under Ruth Moufang at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main ( elliptically curved hypersurfaces in affine differential geometry on a large scale ). After completing his habilitation in Bochum in 1969, he was scientific advisor and professor at the University of Frankfurt from 1970. In 1970 he became a full professor at the Technical University of Berlin and in 1974 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

Schneider deals with integral geometry , convex geometry and stochastic geometry and wrote monographs or textbooks in all three areas.

In 1967 he (like the American Clinton Myers Petty at the same time) solved Shephard's (1964) problem : Let K, L be centrally symmetric convex bodies in n-dimensional Euclidean space and let the volumes of the projections of K on a hyperplane always be smaller or equal than that of L, Shephard conjectured that the volume of K is less than or equal to that of L. This is true for n = 1.2. For higher dimensions according to Petty and Schneider, however, not.

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . Since 1989 he has been co-editor of Discrete and Computational Geometry . In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Salzburg.
