Rolf A. Stein

Rolf Alfred Stein (born June 13, 1911 in Schwetz ; † October 9, 1999 in Paris ) was an important Tibetologist and sinologist .

Life

Rolf Alfred Stein studied Chinese at the Seminar for Oriental Languages in Berlin , where he received his diploma in 1933. After he had fled to France from the National Socialists in the same year , he studied at the École nationale des langues orientales vivantes , where he received another diploma in Chinese in 1934 and one in Japanese in 1936 . He studied Tibetan with Jacques Bacot and Marcelle Lalou . In 1939 he became a French citizen. During the Second World War he worked as a translator in French Indochina , where he was captured by Japan.

From 1951 to 1975 Rolf Alfred Stein was a professor at the École pratique des hautes études . In 1969 he completed his doctorate ( Doctorat d'État ) on the Gesar epic. From 1966 to 1982 he was also a professor at the Collège de France . In 1993 he was elected as a corresponding member of the British Academy .

His most famous students include Anne-Marie Blondeau , Ariane Macdonald-Spain , Samten Karmay , Yamaguchi Zuiho and Yoshiro Imaeda .
