history

Original Rolling Rock bottle with the number "33"

In 1933, the Latrobe Brewery in Latrobe , Pennsylvania was bought by the Tito family, the same year that the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and thus the alcohol prohibition introduced in 1919 was repealed. Six years later, in 1939, the brand Rolling Rock was introduced after the smooth pebbled streams ( German smooth pebbles currents ) was named, from which the beer was produced.

In 1974, on the 35th anniversary of the introduction of beer, 420,000 barrels of beer had already been produced. The brewery continued to grow and became the eighth largest brewery in the United States in 1992, and two years later it hit the one million barrel mark.

Several variants of Rolling Rock have been launched over the years, with the Light-n-Lo being the first in 1985.

2006 took over Anheuser-Busch for 85 million US dollars , the brand Rolling Rock from InBev .

Number 33

Each bottle is sold with a 33 on the back. Since no one has known what this number means since the beginning of this tradition, many myths surround its meaning. There are some theories about the origin of the number 33 (selection):

  • 33 ° F is the temperature at which the Rolling Rock is brewed and should be served
  • 19 33 is the year in which alcohol prohibition was abolished
  • 33 springs allegedly flow into the reservoir from which the beer is made
  • “There are 33 steps,” said the master brewer at Latrobe Brewerey, to get from water to beer
  • 33 was an owner's horse; he and his brother tossed a coin whose horse should be immortalized on the bottle
  • The opinion on quality has 33 words on every bottle
  • 33rd day of the year is Groundhog Day , an important day in the state of origin of beer Pennsylvania
