Turtleneck sweater

White turtleneck

A turtleneck ( colloquially also Rolli ) is a sweater with a tube-like cut high collar (the turtleneck ) extending due to the elasticity of the fabric repeatedly folded once or ( "roll") can, whereby it rests in several layers at the neck.

Turtlenecks are available for both women and men. In the cooler months of the year, the turtleneck warms the neck and can help prevent colds and a sore throat.

history

In the 1890s, the turtleneck appeared as a garment in golf and field sports (such as football and hockey ) in Great Britain . At the turn of the century it became popular as work clothing, especially in shipping .

In the 1950s, the turtleneck became popular in everyday fashion, initially in student circles and later as part of upscale fashion. Wheelchairs were in some cases the identifying marks of existentialists (black) and feminists (white). Hence the image of the melancholy existentialist, who is only found wrapped in black clothing.

In the Woody Allen films, the black turtleneck is used boldly to characterize the intellectuals.

Shapes of the turtleneck

Turtlenecks made of tight, thin fabric are often worn under a blazer as part of elegant fashion ; the turtleneck is tight and high on the neck.

For knitted sweaters, in addition to the turtlenecks that fit close to the neck, very wide turtlenecks are also in fashion, which do not lie on the neck, but hang loosely on the chest. Sleeveless sweaters with turtlenecks are also worn.

Sometimes a front zipper is sewn in so that the collar can be opened when it is not rolled. Optionally, a permanently elastic turtleneck tape can be used so that the turtleneck is particularly tight and does not sag. There are also turtlenecks without a sweater, which can be worn under an ordinary sweater without a high collar, and in return, turtleneck sweaters whose hem ends so low that dresses of various lengths can be made from them.
